Narooma Wins Club to Pub Surf Boat and Ski Race
Narooma Surf Club did extremely well over the weekend, entering two boats and a ski paddler in the 'Club to Pub' Surf Boat and Ski Race. We are very excited and proud of each of the competitors for their fantastic results.
The conditions were ideal with flat seas and little wind, the leading boats and skis beat last years times. The 2013 event is the second year in which the race has been held, being reintroduced after a nine-year break.
The ski paddlers headed off first, with Nick Ziviani taking out 2nd place in what was quite a large field. The mens boats followed with both Narooma crews getting a good start. Narooma held onto first and third positions for a good majority of the race. The Narooma blue boat came in first position outright, at least 80 metres in front of all other boats. Our red boat ran into some difficulty that cost them a little time, however still managed to cross the finish line at Merimbula in fourth place.
The endurance race was basically a 10km sprint from Pambula SLSC to the Public Jetty at Merimbula, attracting local ski paddlers and crews from Lakes Entrance, Bermagui, Tathra, Broulee and Pambula.
Next weekend our boaties will compete again, this time travelling to Sydney for the Rooster River Run, a 12km flat water race on the Georges River. Both boats will have their work cut out for them, rowing without crew changes for over an hour, against the incoming tide.
January 2012 Bass
The Narooma Veteran crewmen, Adam Morris, Brendan Constable, Jason Hextell, Johnny Davis, Max Young, Rod Patmore, Spike Wilton, Steve Dobson and Unto Holopanien achieved third place overall, and are enormously proud of winning the 2nd leg and getting second in the third.
Nick Ziviani, our Narooma Ski Paddler competed for the Dave Pheeney Shield and came in 7th place - a massive endurance effort, racing consistently for 7 days the entire 190km event. Well done Ziv and congratulations on your 6th Bass.
Our female rowers, also known as the Ber-ooma girls, joined forces with the Bermagui crew to compete in the Women’s Open division. Lin Wilton and Sue Lawson have both completed two Bass’ previously and jumped at the opportunity to complete the race for a third time. Bermagui came in 6th place overall and was an immense effort by the girls.
